Federal judge rules that Arizona must recognize marriage of same-sex couple
Today a federal court judge ruled that Arizona must recognize the marriage of George Martinez and Fred McQuire, a Green Valley couple who were married in California.
The decision comes days after Martinez’ death and followed an emergency motion McQuire filed urging the court to recognize their marriage. Both Martinez and McQuire are plaintiffs in a lawsuit challenging Arizona’s same-sex marriage ban.
“George was a brave man and we are all saddened by his loss,” Equality Arizona Co-chair Catherine Alonzo said. “Today the court has moved equality forward in Arizona and that will be a part of his legacy. We offer our condolences to George’s husband and the community and we will continue to honor his memory through the pursuit of equality for all Arizonans.”
