Influence Public Policy
Advocates for the LGBTQ Community
Equality Arizona exists first and foremost to advocate for the LGBTQ community. We believe fundamental changes must be made in public policy at all levels of government to guarantee equality for LGBTQ people. Our advocacy work is directed toward state and local lawmakers, journalists, public administrators, LGBTQ community members, and the general public. If you live in Arizona or know someone who does, these policies impact you.
Although currently our public policy agenda focuses on marriage equality and expanding statewide non-discrimination laws, policy watchdogs and our allies within the legislature alert us to any potential bills that impact the LGBTQ community. In fact, EQAZ has successfully fought against discriminatory bills, defeating them year after year.
To influence public policy, we work within three main communities to achieve the following:
- Provide a voice for the LGBTQ community within State and Municipal governments, as well as school boards across Arizona.
- Engage and educate LGBTQ community members about how to work together to achieve full equality under the law.
- Strive to maintain positive relationships with media outlets to better engage the public in policy discussions.
Public Policy Committee
Every member of the EQAZ team works toward influencing public policy in some way. Two members of our Board Co-Chair the Public Policy Committee, which includes elected officials, public administrators, LGBTQ community members, and allies. The committee works to define policy goals, identify upcoming legislative concerns and opportunities, and advise lawmakers on relevant community issues.
